This locomotive was built in 1916 by Alco at its Cooke, Patterson, NJ, works as 0-4-0T #23 for the Marble Cliff Quarries Co., in Marble Cliff, OH.
The company, headquartered in Upper Arlington, OH, operated the largest limestone quarry in the US from its opening in the mid-19th century until its sale in about 1985. At some point, it was renumbered #12 and ended its working life in Bluffton, IN, where it was sold to Donald Davis in Poneto, IN, some time in the 1960s. Originally a tank engine, the tanks were scrapped after it was bought by Al Foglio in 1983, and a front truck was added for display purposes.
The engine weighs 97,000 lbs and has 44” drivers and 16” x 24” cylinders. A col burner operating at a boiler pressure of 180 psi, it delivered 21,360 lbs tractive effort.
The engine is on static display on the Oregon Coast Highway (Hwy. 101) about three miles south of Florence, OR, just inside the entrance to Gary Foglio Trucking.
