The Carpenter-O'Brian Company in Eastport, FL, bought this Prairie type (2-6-2) locomotive from the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA, in 1914. It was one of three delivered to the logging company that year (#1, #3 & #5).
#3 is typical of the light weight Prairies built for logging roads. It weighs 109,000 lbs, 82,900 lbs on its 44” drivers. The driver wheelbase is 9’ 2” and the engine wheelbase 24’ 8”. With 16” x 24” cylinders, it has a 16 sq ft grate, 112 sq ft firebox and total heating surface of 1,594. Operating at a boiler pressure of 180 psi it delivered 21,364 lbs tractive effort. The tender weighs 70,000 lbs light with a capacity of 3,500 gallons of water.
Brooks-Scanlon bought Carpenter-O'Brian in 1917 and built a new mill at Eastport. #3 was later sold to Revell Crate in Wauchula, FL, where it was known as the "Loping Gopher" and worked in the company’s crate mill. In 1967, it was donated to the Peace River Valley Historical Society in Zolfo Springs, FL, and was placed on display in Pioneer Park, part of the Cracker Trail Museum's Pioneer Village complex.
