#9 is one of five oil burning Mikado type (2-8-2) locomotives built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA, in 1919 for the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company (#4-#7 & #9).

In 1896, a group of lumbermen opened a sawmill in Nickerson, MN. By 1901, they had formed the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company and began building other sawmills and lumber operations in Minnesota. Operations started moving out of the state after the supply of timber had begun to dwindle there and, eventually, the company had operations in Louisiana, Florida, Montana and British Columbia as well as Oregon.

#9 weighs 144,000 lbs, 118,100 lbs on its 44” drivers and has a driver wheelbase of 12’ and engine wheelbase of 27’ 7”. It has Walschaert valve gear and 18” x 24” cylinders. With a 25.5 sq ft grate, 141 sq ft firebox and total heating surface of 1,904 including 328 sq ft of superheating, it operated at a boiler pressure of 190 psi delivering 28,541 lbs tractive effort. The tender weighs 88,000 lbs light and has a capacity of 4,000 gallons of water and 2,000 gallons of oil.
