Defiance Coal Company #2, Babe Ruth Park, Gallup, NM

Mining coal in Gallup, NM, started in 1882 when the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad reached the recently incorporated town. The Defiance Coal Company bought their first mine in the area in 1919 and George Kaseman of Albuquerque operated it until 1952.

To move coal to a tipple at Mentmore, the company built a 40” narrow gauge railroad with two locomotives, #1, an 0-4-0ST (Saddle Tank) built by H. K. Porter in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1921 and #2, an 0-4-0ST built by the Davenport Locomotive Works in Davenport, IA, in 1930. The railroad had about 20 miles of track in its system of underground mines and surface track. The Company made its last run on 28th March 1952.

#2 weighs 42,000 lbs. It has 29” drivers, 11” x 16” cylinders and, operating at a boiler pressure of 170 psi, it delivered 9,600 lbs tractive effort. In 1940, the engine was sold to Howard Wilson and Bert Cresto in Gallup, NM. In 1967, it was sold on to the City of Gallup, NM, and is now on display in Babe Ruth Park.
