Long-Bell Lumber #102, Vernonia, OR

Built by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, OH, in 1912 for the Hofius Steel & Equipment Co., in Seattle, WA, as #2, this two truck Shay weighs 71,150 lbs.

W.D. Hofius came to Seattle from Pennsylvaniain the late 1880s after being involved in various iron and steel works in the East and mid-West. He formed a partnership with William Pigott with whom he had previously partnered in several iron and steel ventures. and in 1893 organised the firm W.D. Hofius & Co., predecessor to the Hofius Steel & Equipment Co., a maker of "Iron and Steel, Machinery and Railway Supplies". Hofius was head of the business until his death in 1912.

An oil burner with 29½" drivers and 10" x 12" cylinders, it operated at a boiler pressure of 180 psi delivering 16,900 lbs tractive effort. The bunker held 800 gallons of oil and 1,560 gallons of water. #2 went through a series of owners until arriving at the Long-Bell Lumber Co., in 1953, where it was renumbered #102. Five years later, it was donated to the City of Vernonia, OR, and is on display at the corner of Nehalem Hwy and Adams Ave.
