Rockton-Rion #19 is on display at the Railroad Historical Center in Greenwood, SC

#19 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Woodward Iron Co., in Woodward, AL., in 1906. It is Mikado type (2-8-2) locomotive weighing 209,700 lbs, 173,000 lbs on its 51” drivers. The driver wheelbase is 14’ 6” and the engine wheelbase 29’. The grate is 57 sq ft, the firebox 182.3 sq ft and total heating surface is 3,300 sq ft. With 222 x 28” cylinders, it operated at a boiler pressure of 200 psi delivering 45,173 lbs tractive effort. The tender weighs 140,000 light with a capacity of 7,000 gallons of water and 11 tons of coal.

The Rockton and Rion was completed in 1897, a Class III railroad operating from a connection with the Southern at Rockton twelve miles to Anderson Quarry, SC, as the railroad for the Winnsboro Granite Company. It was owned by the Heyward family and freight consisted of sand and gravel moving outbound from Anderson Quarry.

The railroad was sold to Martin Marietta Aggregate in 1967 who continued to operate the line until 1978. Operations formally ceased on 21st August 1981. In 1983, Martin Marietta donated the right-of-way to the South Carolina Railroad Museum who now offer tourist excursions on a short section of track as the Rockton, Rion & Western Railroad.

At some point, #19 was sold to the dealer Southern Iron & Equipment Co., in Atlanta, GA, who sold it on to the Rockton & Rion Railroad in Rion, SC, in 1936. Operations ceased on 21st August 1981. In October 1983, Martin Marietta Aggregate donated the right-of-way to the South Carolina Railroad Museum.

Thirty-three years later, #19 was sold to L. B. Adams and C. H. Herdon and then, in 1973, to
the Greenwood Heritage Center in Greenwood, SC. It is on display at the Railroad Historical Center.
