This Mikado type (2-8-2) locomotive was built at Alco’s Schenectady, NY, works in 1924 for the Toledo, Angola & Western Railway as #100.
The engine weighs 202,000 lbs, 155,000 lbs on its 50” drivers. It has a 50 sq ft grate and 160 sq ft firebox including 23 sq ft of arch tubes, with a total heating surface of 3,478 sq ft. Operating at a boiler pressure of 180 psi, it delivered 37,800
lbs tractive effort. The water leg tender weighs 121,000 lbs
light and has a capacity of 6,000 gallons of water and 8 tons of coal.
In 1949, #100 was sold to the scrap dealer Iron & Steel Products Incorporated in Chicago, IL, who then sold it the following year for $17,000 to the Elk River Coal & Lumber Company at Winden, WV, where it was renumbered #10. It worked from 1950 to 1959 on the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad, an operation built to serve the coal and timber interests of Elk River Coal & Lumber in Clay County, WV. It was used to haul mine waste from the Rich Run Mine at Widen to the “gob pile". The locomotive was taken out of service in 1959 and went into storage at Widen “gob pile” with the cab boarded up.
In 1963, #10 was donated to the Huntington
Railway Museum and went into storage at Chesapeake & Ohio’s Huntington, WV, Locomotive Shops.
It moved to its current location at the Cabell-Huntington Convention and Visitors Center on 17th May 1977 liveried as Baltimore & Ohio #4559 in honour of the last B&O steam locomotive to operate in Huntington, even though #10 never graced the B&O rails. In 2000, the engine was repainted and reverted back to its historic lettering and number.
