Built as #857, this is one of thirty Class 851 Consolidation type (2-8-0) locomotives built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe in 1900 by Burnham, Williams & Co., an early incarnation of the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA (#851-#890). #857 was soon reclassed as a 729 and renumbered #735.

#735 has a 23’ 5” engine wheelbase and 15’ 4” driver wheelbase with Stephenson valve gear and 21” x 30” cylinders. It weighs 180,080 lbs, 163,150 lbs on its 57” drivers. With a 30 sq ft grate, 183 sq ft firebox and total heating surface of 2,190 sq ft, it operated at a boiler pressure of 180 psi delivering 35,512 lbs tractive effort. The tender weighs 105,000 lbs light with a capacity of 6,000 gallons of water and 8½ tons of coal.

#735 was donated to the City of Hutchinson, KS, in 1954 and was then donated by the city to the Halstead Jaycees. It is now on display at the Lindsborg Heritage Center just off S Santa Fe Ave. The Center was closed when I passed through, so I could get only limited shots of the engine and it had been raining hard. You can see another ATSF 729 on the ATSF #762 page of this website.
