Consolidation type (2-8-0) locomotive #762 was built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe in 1900 by Burnham, Williams & Co., an early incarnation of the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA, as #884, one of thirty Class 851s (#851-#890). #884 was soon reclassed as a 729 and renumbered #762.
The locomotive has an engine wheelbase of 23’ 5”and a driver wheelbase of 15’ 4”. It is equipped with Stephenson valve gear and has 21” x 30” cylinders. Weighing 180,080
lbs, 163,150 lbs on its 57” drivers with a 30 sq ft grate, 183
sq ft firebox and total heating surface of 2,190 sq ft, it operated at a boiler pressure of 180 psi delivering 35,512
lbs tractive effort. The tender weighs 105,000 lbs light and has a total capacity of 6,000 gallons of water and 8½ tons of coal.
#762 was donated to the City of Chanute, KS, by the Santa
Fe in 1955. It is now on display in Santa Fe Park. You can
