Southern Sand & Gravel #102, Palmer, MA

The H. K. Porter Works in Pittsburgh, PA, built this 0-6-0 switcher for the Southern Sand & Gravel Company in Massaponax, VA, in 1915. It was later sold to the Sturm & Dillard Company in Circleville, OH, then to the Ohio railroad equipment dealer George Silcott and later to Nicholas Bicking in Weavetonsing, MI.

In 1976, it was bought by the Rock Shop at Alanson, MI, and in 1980 by James Kopkey. It is now on display near the historic Union Depot in Palmer, MA, built in 1884 for the Boston & Maine and New London Northern.

A coal burner, #102 weighs 104,000 lbs and has 48” drivers and 18” x 24” cylinders. Operating at a boiler pressure of 170 psi, it delivered 23,328 lbs tractive effort.
