This 0-6-0 switcher #410 was built for the Boston & Maine Railroad by the Manchester Locomotive Works in Manchester, NH, in 1911. A coal burner, it weighs 147,700 lbs. With 52" drivers and 19" x 26" cylinders, it operated at a boiler pressure of 200 psi delivering 30,600 lbs tractive effort.
The engine worked at Lowell and elsewhere on the B&M until
1950, when it was sold to the H. E. Fletcher Granite Company in Westford, MA. Two years later, when the engine’s flue time
expired, it was replaced by ex-BM G-11b #444 (you can see photos and find out more about this 0-6-0 on the BM #444 page of this website).
In 1981, Fletcher Granite donated #410 to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for preservation at the Museum of Transportation in Boston. It was moved to the B&M Shops at North Billerica, MA, but the planned museum never got off the ground. For twelve years, it remained in storage until donated to the Lowell Historic Park in 1993. It is on display with BM Combination Car #1224 adjacent to the site of the original Boston & Lowell passenger station at the corner of Merrimack and Dutton streets.
